Grade Level: 9
- Grade 8 Subject Award for Zulu
Ayanda is an outgoing, kind and cheerful girl who hails from Nkohlakolo village, a rural area 12 miles from the Uplands College campus. Her father, Abdul, is a bricklayer and her mother is a seamstress. Ayanda lives with her mother in a modest four-room home with no indoor plumbing.
In her second year at Uplands, she has settled into her academic studies and made many new friends. Prior to starting at Uplands, Ayanda expressed trepidation about participating in sports, but now loves playing on the soccer, netball and volleyball teams at the school. She has done well in her technology and Zulu classes, and even competed in a “Zulu Olympiad” at the school. She is also actively involved in the environmental program at Uplands.
Ayanda hopes to become a pilot one day, but in the meantime she enjoys cooking, baking and spending time with her family.
