Joy joined the KLM program in January 2009. During her first few years at Uplands College, Joy has received excellent marks, finishing near the top of her class, and is known as a delight to teach.
Joy is from Mphatseni Village, a short distance away from Kruger National Park, where she attended Royal Primary School. Joy speaks fondly of her village despite the low standard of living. Ever since her parents died, Joy and her older sister have lived apart from their other siblings in an unfinished home without running water or electricity.
According to her older sister, Joy has always been a great student. Children from the village would come to their home to learn from Joy, and she has always had fun teaching them. Joy also likes reading almost anything in her spare time.
Joy is actively involved in both community service and in the Uplands community. This year she volunteered at a local program for AIDS orphans and a school for disabled children and is on the school’s dance, food, and Toast Masters (public speaking) committees. She is also an avid horseback rider, sings in the school choir, takes guitar and swim lessons, and plays on the school’s netball team.
Economic management sciences is one of her favorite courses because she is learning about business and economic problems. While at Uplands, Joy hopes to build the knowledge needed to improve her own community and others like it. Joy also has a strong interest in the natural sciences. She dreams of being a research scientist working on a cure for cancer or HIV/AIDS. Finally, Joy plans to use her success to benefit other orphans like her.
Joy’s advice for future KLM scholars: Do not give up no matter what happens in life and always strive for what you want.
